HOWLING AT THE FULL MOON 

THREE CHANCES   

True to the name “Cruising Squadron”, this coming Saturday, June 18, 2022 will offer the first opportunity to cruise out and greet the first of three  full summer super moons with a full throated howl. However, unless we plan ahead, you may be the only one out there or miss it all together. The full moon for June will show its face for the first time Saturday night, just after midnight. 

A full moon over Stockton lake, no matter what time of night, can be an awe inspiring event. This week from Wednesday on will be the first “super” moon and it is called the Strawberry Moon honoring the traditional time for the strawberry harvest. For those who wish to gather for the “HOWLING”, it will be preceded by a cookout and potluck at E-park. Mayor Todd will light the grills at 6:30 and the usual and unusual side dishes are always the best part. This will be the first time this year that we will be able to celebrate the complete disappearance of the “ferry boats” as Matt and his crew have hauled them away this week!

Next month we will have another “HOWLING” at the full moon on Saturday the 16th of July when the second super full moon, called the “Buck” moon, celebrates when the bucks start to get their new antlers. The 16th is also the first of six Summer Series Saturdays when the Cruising Squadron will have a 7 mile pursuit race with posted starting times. All of the Summer Series races are followed by a raft up at sunset cove. On the 16th, we will also have a “PRE HOWLING” potluck cook-out prior to howling at the full Buck Moon at 11:30PM.  

Summer Series race number 5 will be on August 15th and will coincide with the third and last of the summer super full moons. This super full moon is called the “Sturgeon” moon and was the traditional time for native people around the great lakes to find the best sturgeon fishing. For us, the final super full moon will rise at 9:30PM and give us the perfect opportunity to not only howl at the moon, but also set a race course and be able to award the coveted “MOONLIGHT MADNESS” trophy.
