Barry doing the Blessing of the fleet

Saturday, May 6 was the revival of the blessing of the fleet and the other activities which followed. A total of a dozen boats, including the new LSYC committee, boat enjoyed the blessing provided by past Commodore, Barry Nelson complete with sprinkles and confetti. Those who stayed out for the pursuit start parade/race were blessed to find good conditions and fair sailing. Five boats started and four finished with past commodore Brad Bledsoe and his crew winning the day. Second, and not far behind was Paul Nahon in his Hobie 33 with a developing crew. The all women crew on Breezy directed by Stephanie Cooper was a very excited third, and following along in forth in the Newport 28-2 Mai Oui was Michael Kretk. The weather conditions turned out to be very manageable and everyone had a great sail, including the crew of the new committee boat which was very comfortable all day long out there and was very handy for setting the course and having a comfortable seat to watch from.

The social committee headed by Todd McQueen really outdid themselves with a Cinco de Mayo party better than any I can remember. All of these folks have had lots of practice in doing these after race events and we have a lot to look forward to this year. At one point Barry counted 38 people right in that area at tables and being served. That number was pretty consistent throughout for a couple hours and a good time was had by all. In the true tradition of our “barefoot“ club, where there is no permanent facility for putting on a party, everything was assembled, and then taken down afterward with amazing efficiency. Much of the credit can go to the fact that we are a durable group of sailors, who enjoy being with each other and are finally getting over the Covid hangover.

The next opportunity for sailing and gathering at Shark Park will be the annual Spring Fling regatta on May 20 and 21st. There will be a round the buoys race featuring the J/22 fleet, and a one day, Saturday pursuit 10 mile race for everyone else. Final details for both parts of this event will be posted everywhere over the next 10 days. There will be something for everyone and you want to be sure, and be a part of all of this activity.

See you soon!
